The intervertebral fusion cage is a large, hollow cylinder made of high-grade metal, typically titanium. Designed as a "cage," it allows bone graft placement inside the hollow cylinder to facilitate spinal fusion between two vertebrae. The specialized perforations throughout the cage enable bone formation around and through the structure, securing the two vertebrae with solid bone.
Many modern intervertebral fusion cages are engineered for versatility, supporting both traditional open incision surgery and advanced laparoscopic procedures. While the traditional approach provides direct visibility, the laparoscopic method utilizes smaller incisions and specialized camera systems to minimize tissue damage and accelerate patient recovery.
